I'm a big Karin Slaughter fan so it's no surprise that I really enjoyed this one. This does feel slightly different to her other works but it was still a super gripping, suspenseful read.

This one begins when Andrea and her mum, Laura, are out eating in a diner together when a gunman comes in and begins to shoot. Andrea is petrified, she's scared for her life, but Laura is calm. The whole time Laura remains calm and collected even when she kills the gunman. This reaction is so unexpected that it begins to make questions arise from Andrea, like does she really know her mother?

I couldn't get enough of this, it definitely kept me fully engaged the entire time. This isn't a fast-paced, twisty thriller, it's more of a slow-paced crime novel where everything is revealed gradually throughout. This is told through two different timelines, the present and the past showing how exactly Laura came to be who she is now, but the timelines are weaved together so perfectly. I just think Slaughter's imagination is brilliant and I can always count on her for a winning thriller.
