liked it

This book really picked up in the second half. Chaon is an amazing writer, and the book is a lovely, although depressing, read. I suppose I would have liked to know the characters a little better from the beginning. It took a while to figure out their motivations, which is of course because they themselves can't figure out their motivations, but as a reader I would have appreciated more insight given that the story is not a first-person narrative. I should also admit that, in the end, I was not particularly fond of any of the characters, and was somewhat surprised when I realized that we were supposed to care about Troy and Jonah in the end, even after everything. Nonetheless, as a first novel (Chaon previously published only short stories), this book is well structured, compelling, and ultimately effective. I recommend it, if you're willing to be sad for a while.
