did not like it

Unfortunately, I felt that this book was a waste of time for my purposes. I can see what Houm was attempting but I felt the story was not only anticlimactic but possibly, to coin a new term, "un-climactic." There were moments where the prose was going toward being poetic and saying something revealing but the plot fell short of the conviction and purpose I like to experience when reading a novel. The end was unsatisfying and I did not find it easy to be interested in Jane's plight. More, the translation turned out clunky, a bit disjointed and difficult to read in many places. The whole book felt more like an intellectual exercise to be worked through rather than a story to be taken in, which could pose problems if you want a narrative to be engrossed in rather than a task to get through when it comes to reading material.
