it was ok

Jacqueline Winspear clearly has writing talent. She artfully pieces together scenes and characters. I could feel the effort she put in to carefully crafting each sentence. However, the overall story line did not work. Was it historical fiction or was it a mystery? Neither, but she gave a stab at both. So disappointing.

I really enjoyed the WWI stories from the trenches of France that were experienced by the main character, but they did not tie in to the rest of the story so they fell flat. And the "mystery" was not interesting at all. I felt a bit of excitement for about 3 pages at the very end of the book, otherwise I was scanning paragraphs to get past all of the description in search of some kind of action to capture my attention.

I always try to finish books that I start, so I did so with this one. But did I enjoy it? Only for a few fleeting moments.
