a sort of fascinating book that uses the Gary Hart/Donna Rice scandal of 1987 as a launching point for the thesis that the media's concern with character has driven us toward focus-grouped politicians that lack any human qualities, resulting in stagnation of the advancement of political ideas. Gary Hart was a brilliant politician whose sex scandal during the 1987 political campaign kneecapped his potential candidacy and ushered in an era of character assassination that ignored things like policy in favor of in depth investigation and dissection of our politicians personal lives, wherein we crucify them for any past transgressions. this is a compelling thesis and Hart is a compelling character, but this is not a terribly compelling book.
