it was ok

Just like Steig Larsson's Girl Who series, the books in The Strain Trilogy suffer from a literary law of diminishing returns: the more backstory Chuck Hogan and Guillermo del Toro give their vampires, the more (as I described it in my review of The Fall) Biblical gobbledygook they pile on to explain their monsters' existence, the worse the books get. All the tension and the action of the first is nearly gone by the third. Instead, we get treated to a retelling of the story of Sodom and Gomorrah--and we all know how that ended.

I will give the two men props, though: they've created vampires the way any good monster should be--disgusting, nasty, and cunning, not sparkly and romantic.
