I'm surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. I somehow survived my childhood without ever having watched the movie version of Old Yeller. I had never heard of the book on which it was based til recently. I'm so glad I read it. A great tale of colonial life in America, and all the hardships that entails- deadly encounters with varied wild animals who are out to kill you, the daily struggle to exist and annoying little brothers. Written in the engaging first person voice of Travis Coates, who at 14 is left to be the man of the house for a few months while his father drives some cattle to Kansas. Old Yeller turns up soon after, he initially steals their food, but of course steals their hearts, and becomes indispensable to the family, helping to protect them in the harsh Texas environment. I hope to be able to get my 10 year old to read this, I think he'd enjoy it. I certainly did.
