As Gertrude Stein once noted, "A rose is a rose is a rose," and in this case, a dog is a dog--except when it is not a dog, but a cat or a squid or a moose. The author turns readers' assumptions upside down and forces them to wait to see what is next. The digital illustrations are filled with color that helps readers see the animals in action. This one reminds me of Except If, published earlier this year. Both rely on the same type of humor and predictions for what's coming next. While I appreciated the fact that unusual animals are chosen, I didn't find the concept behind the book particularly compelling.
