Peter Sis's first book for adults (although I think his autobiographical picture books are really as much for adults as children, if not more so) is a gorgeously tactile re-imagining of a segment of a Persian poem. Though it is a book that can be read swiftly in one sitting (as a child at one of his signings boasted "I read it all standing in line to have it signed"), what makes it an adult book, is the deeply spiritual journey that the conference of birds undertake and which cries out to be pondered and meditated upon at a leisurely pace. This is a book that celebrates the very physicality of the book itself with textured paper that entices fingers to trace the labyrinths along with the birds and slow down your reading. A treasure of a book that will be enjoyed again and again.
