I can imagine this series getting better in future books, but I don't think very highly of this debut. Darian is a shade - she can turn into shadow at night, and is trapped in her body during the day. She thinks she's the last of her kind, but it turns out her maker lied to her - there's a whole world of "other" out there, including a shade nation. Darian's profession is assassin, and she is recruited by the king of the shades to assassinate someone. Her assassin handler has the hots for her, and she ends up in a love triangle with the king of the shades also after her. Meanwhile, it turns out the mark is very dangerous and has deadly friends. Darian is in constant danger and eventually ends up in the center of a prophecy.
