I am a couple hours into the audiobook, and annoyed that Ish is kind of a dick. I understand the book will reflect the thinking of the time, but that doesn't make me enjoy the sexist writing any more (this is why I have trouble with classic SF). beyond that, Ish doesn't seem to really mourn the world, he keeps a detached and scholarly view of everything. he abandons a drunk because he doesn't want a companion of that ilk, then feels little remorse when he finds the man dead of alcohol poisoning. I hope this is a story of his discovery of his own humanity...

Mur Lafferty Took a break from reading and realized that thinking about going back to it makes me feel dread. Moving on to 7th Sigma. I know it's a beloved classic, but I can't get by the jerkface protag.

You know, I *can* appreciate an annoying or otherwise unsympathetic protagonist. But it has to be done very carefully.

Hanna Yes, Ish comes across as a snob with an arrogant attitude towards those less intellectual and educated than himself. I guess his view of women is typical of the time, and same thing with the "negroes" - it is just too much when Ish seriously considers to stay with some black people and "have them do all my work, with me being the king". It's still a classic book though but if does feel very dated.

David I like how everyone is confused on why things happen...like say so many cows...so many mountain lions...and so forth. But, Ish immediately understands why these things occur and stops the story to let us know why he is so superior to those around him. Please.

Eric Gardner You might be happy with where Ish ends up!
