The universal pains of a girl's stumbling journey to womanhood definitely overshadow the more specific agonies of growing up Latina, which made it easy to relate to Esperanza's series of vignettes. I just can't help but feel like the whole story would have flowed together better if it were told in a graphic-novel format rather than a whole lot of two- or three-page snippets. Also, I read the bulk of this book in an insomnia-flavored haze, so take from that what you will.
