it was ok
bookshelves: dystopia, young-adult
Read from November 18 to 20, 2011

I was curious to see what was up with this book since it seems to be one of the more popular YA books to come out this year. At first, I was annoyed by the simple writing and the heavy-handed story-telling. The author's intent is especially transparent in the beginning, which isn't something that compels me to continue reading. But I was bored and wanted a quick read, so this filled the gap nicely.

The story goes where you expect and there aren't any surprises at all. Even the main love interest is obvious as soon as he's introduced. The foreshadowing was superfluous since nothing was unexpected and then the over-explanation about everything made me see this as a dumbed-down dystopian book. I guess if you're 13 and have never read any dystopian stories before, this would be an okay starting point.

There were a few sentences that were particularly good and poignant, but as a whole, the writing just seemed like a clumsy way to deliver a predictable storyline.
