bookshelves: fantasy, horse-stories, ya

The better books I've read this year all seem to be YA. This one is no exception. It's a great take on the Gaelic myth of the water horse. Yeah, I have issues. I disbelieved Puck's reasons for wanting to take part in the race--especially as her normal horse Dove is "her best friend," and yet the water horses see Dove as prey, and she is willing to risk Dove's life. I also think the writer missed on Dove entirely--when the water horse attack the farm, Dove stays still as a statue. Horses ARE prey animals, and their first instince is ALWAYS run away! And...since the water horse do come ashore in the autumn, and are so very dangerous, the whole populace seems entirely unprepared, yet this danger is something they've live with for millenia, apparently.

However, that said, the characters are involving and Sean and Corr's is a story worth reading just for itself--and I did like Puck.
