David Sedaris’ collections are always praised for their humor and his 1997 novel, Naked is no exception. While I do in fact find him funny I think the classification of his books as humor is a little misleading. Most of the humor present comes from his extreme sense of self doubt and loathing, the dark tones do offer some comic relief, but it lacks the mainstream appeal it is marketed to be. Sedaris is a skilled writer of personal essays and the memoir, his ability to put interesting, attention grabbing spins on otherwise boring stories about childhood and growing up is an attribute I think other authors should strive to achieve.
