Mr. Terupt is the new, young, life-changing teacher at the Snow Hill School in Connecticut. The story is told through the eyes of 7 kids in the 5th grade, and each is a "type"--the popular mean girl, the smart kid, the new girl, the shy girl, the wild boy, etc. These kids all have strong voices, and do a great job capturing your attention and moving the story along in a satisfying way. Lots of the vignettes will ring true to kids and teachers--the author obviously spent time in the classroom. The book builds to a very dramatic climax--and while it seems realistic--it also feels like it was designed to allow all the characters to change and grow, and in this way feels a bit too forced to me. It reminded me a lot of Steven Herrick's Naked Bunyip Dancing. Kids who enjoyed that book, are likely to love this one.
