I realize I LOVE and recommend so many books but for those of you who love fantasy worlds this is a fantastic breakout first novel and #1 in a series (I do not know how many) that is worth your time. I was able to sink my teeth into this world, characters and storyline. It was the perfect amount of description and dialogue for my taste so the story keeps moving and the reader engaged while building a beautiful and intriguing world of history, magic, and political oppression. This is Adeyemi's attempt to help us experience the lasting and painful consequences of our countries racial inequality and in my humble opinion she does an excellent job drawing the reader into empathy and love for these characters because she explores and allows the greyness that exists when we enter relationship with one another (and sometimes not). It has everything I love about fantasy alongside a deeply relevant social commentary that needs to be heard. So, buy the book, support the author and enjoy this magnificent new world!!!
