The Fire Child is my second book by S. K. Tremayne. At the beginning, I like the story, the plot and setting of a poor young woman marrying a rich, older man who has an exquisite, ancient mansion up on a cliff in Crowell, gives out a very strong Rebecca's vibe. And isn't it nice for a reader to escape to the upper-class life in a mansion by the ice-cold sea for a while?

The problem is, this older new husband happens to have a dead wife in his past and there is also a stepson, and said stepson is seeing the ghost of his mother all the times. So, most of the book deals with the whole 'is the ex-wife truly dead? Who is lying? What really happened in the night of the ex-wife's accident? Is the second wife going crazy', blah blah blah.

Well, it could have worked out, but after half of the book all those supposed 'suspense and mysteries' are getting boring and long-winded, plus I was sick and tired of all the dramas about rape and mental illness (as plot devices), blah blah blah. Not to mention the ending and the final revealing is.................underwhelming and some aspect of said ending is a bit too similar to the author's previous book, The Ice Twins?

3 stars only.

PS: still I actually enjoy seeing both the second-wife's POV and the husband's POV, especially the latter.
