bookshelves: historical, photo-journalism, memoir, wide-reading-for-ci-546, informational

wide reading for CI 546

grade level: late middle to high school.

genre: informational book, historical, some bits are memoir-esque

awards: Newberry Honor Book. Robert F. Sibert Honor book.

school use: I might use this book in a unit on WWII after the students had a pretty substantial introduction to Hitler, the Nazis, the Holocaust, etc. This would be an extension of their learning.

review: So intensely sad and horrifying, I had to resort to skim and scan to get through it without bawling continuously. So many horrible details, children beheaded for seeing through the Nazi baloney. So so so sad.
