This probably deserves more than three stars, but I couldn't see my way clear to giving it a fourth. It is an engrossing epic-scale fantasy adventure. Sanderson deserves a lot of credit for doing a lot of heavy lifting and work making the story hold together in both the short and the long terms. It isn't easy to make something like this fit together and the keep the story moving while putting the pieces into place for later.

That said, it took a lot of pages before I started to care about any of the characters. Sanderson isn't doing what Joe Abercrombie excells in, creating ambiguous characters that we recognize we aren't supposed to 100% like. Sanderson just doesn't seem to be able to write well in the short term. After 1000 pages, I got was he was doing and I like it. However, it is slow going. Slow, slow going to get there.
