a great insight into the working class/leisure class divide of the late 19th and early 20th century. martin eden is a hard working sailor who becomes consumed by the desire for beauty and knowledge in a stiffly stratified san francisco of the early 20th century. i need to finish this. it is jack london's semi-autobiography, but it passionately portrays the 'strenuous life' so to speak (to borrow from theodore roosevelt) and how, in the right soul, it can dream far beyond the polite genteel knowledge of the upper classes.
