This book set out to be science-fiction of the Stars before the distant future and after the near future with a focus on the people. I think it succeeded on both accounts.

You know the book is good if you hate to love and love to hate some of the characters. Holden is a self-righteous sometimes thoughtless asshole, but he's a good man. Amos is the coolest Earther ever (period). Alex + his gut + flying = *smilies*. Naomi is awesome too and a little bit to protective of herself ((view spoiler)). Miller is insane but I couldn't help agree with him several times over. Stupid prick made me like him. Don't forget Fred - the ultimate marriage counselor!

I would also like to mention that there are great side characters too - Lt. Kelly, Diogo, Muss, Shaddid, etc. They flesh the universe out and make it real.

I was not expecting the direction this book went in, but that's a good thing. Give it a try if you like sci-fi spaceships and stars and aliens.
