The second part of their "science fantasy month" issues, these four stories all feature a post-apocalyptic setting. The best of them is Rich Larson's "Penitents", the story of a privileged girl living in a "hab" who hires a scavenger from the "slaglands" to help her rescue her best friend from the aliens who have attacked earth. A nice balance of character and action throughout, though the twist at the end begs a few questions that the story fails to account for.
Of the other three stories, "The Last Human Child" by Milo James Fowler is better than average, but the titular child doesn't make a very convincing child, and the plot is way to busy and not focused enough for a story of its length.
