Glimmerglass is a YA fantasy written by Jenna Black and published by St. Martin’s Griffin.

The Story- Welcome to a world where fairies are real, but can only live in an isolated city called Avalon. Dana is a teenager who has spent her entire life hiding from her father. Fed up with her drunk mother, Dana decides it is time to get to know her father, her fairy father.

But, when she arrives in Avalon she is pulled into a cutthroat game of fairy politics. Fairies all around are intent on killing her, so she spends most of her time being shuffled between one safe house and another. Ethan, cute son of a rival politician, keeps coming to her rescue. Can she trust him? Plus, she learns that she herself has magical powers. She is a Faeriwalker, a rare individual who can travel between worlds. In fact, one hasn’t existed in over 500 years. Desperate to escape, but with nowhere to run, Dana must be brave and trust in love. In the end, even members of her own family become suspect.

My Thoughts- An interesting book. It has the typical fairy world, the Seelie and Unseelie, and is full of fairy rivalry. The thing that is unique is the idea that fairies are unable to cross into the mortal world. They live in Avalon, a semi-land that exists between fairy and Earth. They are unable to interact with the world except by human proxies.

Dana thinks she is a normal teenager, it is not until she goes into Avalon that she learns she is special, a Faeriewalker. The poor girl doesn’t know what she’s gotten herself into. I enjoyed her character and even better, she is still developing at the end of the book. I can’t wait to see what she’s turned into by book 2, Shadowspell.

Even though there is mild violence, it is not the type to scare younger readers. I’d say this book is fine for 12 and up.
