it was amazing

Powerful and poignant, this is one of the finest historical novels I've ever read.

A riveting, compelling story of loss, restoration, tragedy, triumph, despair and hope set in war-torn Germany, Holland and England. Unfolding over about seven years, the story is told in the first person through the eyes of Franziska "Frances" Mangold. She is ten years old when we first meet her and her friend Bekka in 1938 Berlin.

Couldn't put it down! Read all 400+ pages (including the Epilogue and Afterword) in a day and a half. Would give it six stars if I could.
