I wish Chabon had stuck with the original title "Jews with Swords," but he continues his almost irritatingly successful tour across genres, and goes about as far afield of his "angst in pittsburgh" roots as possible. This one's set in the tenth century, and is reminiscent of the 19th century dime novel adventure tales. Like all of his work, he brings an admirable depth of characters and emotion, which is all the more impressive here considering the book's basic swashbuckling, action orientation. It is a play on novels fast, entertaining reads, and that's pretty much what it is.
