This book is a highly amusing parody of the Romantic-era gothic novel and (perhaps unintentionally) of female quixotism. If you can get your hands on it, it's a good read.

Veronica Austen read this while writing Emma--sounds like a parody of conduct literature along the lines of Charlotte Lennox's Female Quixote.
