it was amazing
bookshelves: historical-fiction, 2018-read

I loved this book. In the beginning, I thought Isabelle was going be part of a "Woe is me" story, but events quickly escalated into a truly meaningful novel. The historical events depicting Isabelle's heroism were things I'd never heard of before. I'm grateful to Kristin Hannah for writing this book and sharing with us the courage and hope of the women during World War II. The ending was spectacular. I read the last chapter through tears, realizing what a tremendous impact everyday people can have on future generations. I think now I finally understand why my father never spoke of his role in the war. He was a hero, too, but never thought of himself as such. People were simply reaching out to one other and helping each other survive.
