it was amazing
bookshelves: ages-9-to-12, picture-books, post-2001

Uri Shulevitz based his Caldecott Honor-winning tale on his childhood memories of World War II. After fleeing their home country, money is sparse, leaving little for food. When his father brings home a map instead of a sliver of bread, his family is initially disappointed. But the young narrator realizes that the map's help in exercising his imagination may have been worth going hungry that night. Colorful, detailed, interesting illustrations accompany the text perfect for older children.
