This is one of my all time favorite books. I know a lot of people are leery of this book because of the size and because the author died before completing the last chapters but please, do not let that put you off (and also, she pretty much wrapped everything up so it's not like the story was half finished. Everything is set in place it's just missing a few bows). This book is amazing because it's one of the few that deal with relationships. And not just of the romantic kind but all human relationships are described here. Between parents/children, stepparents/stepchildren, husband/wife, townspeople/lord and ladies, siblings/siblings etc. Gaskell's writing is superb in the fact that every character is fleshed out and detailed and all the characters are believable, relateable people. It's long, yes, but really worth the time. Honestly.
