bookshelves: horror, middle-grade

This first volume about the Baudelaire children intrigued me. It set off a whole genre of children's books with dark settings and events (um... Spiderwick Chronicles?) but managed to do it in what still seemed to be a light-hearted way. I also really appreciated that the author used bigger words and explained their meaning right in the same paragraph. Instead of talking down to kids (a la Junie B. Jones), he helps to expand their vocabulary.

Side note: I somehow managed to read both Chasing Vermeer and The Wright 3 without realizing that they were illustrated by the same guy as the Series of Unfortunate Events (Brett Helquist). Huh. I do really like his work.
