This is a good, but not a great book.

What makes it good is that the author takes an actual time and situation and weaves it into a fascinating tale. It did happen in England that a village did quarantine itself. The actual events are quite different from those described by Geraldine Brooks, but so what? Her imagining of life as it could have been is plausible -- up to a point. That point comes at the end of the book. The ending is just awful. I don't want to give it away here, but it makes no sense in the context of the rest of the book. Which is really too bad because it's a missed chance at a great book.

On the other hand, the writing style did make me want to read more of what Geraldine Brooks has written. She's definitely on my list.
