it was amazing

Often, I'm a bit puzzled by why a book wins awards. This time round, I found this tough to get into, the deliberate style feeling rather distant compared to what I usually liked. Often when I get that feeling it's accompanied by a sense that I won't be missing much if I stop, but the Fifth Season oozes quality. It's an interesting world with continent-shaking magic that somehow balances being post-apocalyptic with also not being, but the story is deeply rooted in the personal and the more I read the more I saw how it was seamlessly coming together. A classy book that felt like a stand-alone and had great emotional impact, I'm almost a bit wary of getting the sequel in case it disappoints. But I suspect I'll get over that.
