This was my very first James Lee Burke book and I picked it up because of all the hype. I have to agree with the hype because I found this to be a story that I could hardly stop reading. I thought that the cast of characters was just an awesome mix, and their connections, tangential or direct, drove a very compelling storyline. I now have to go back and read Burke's novel, Rain Gods, which leads directly into this novel. I suspect that this may be just the beginning of my reading relationship with James Lee Burke!!
