really liked it
bookshelves: sf-fantasy
Recommended for: fans of the first book in the series

This book wasn't quite as good as the first. The liveliness of Novik's writing very nearly disguises the fact that the middle of the book consists of a long sea voyage during which most of the action consists of: Temeraire gets upset; Laurence sulks; The Chinese ambassadors behave inscrutably; Laurence sulks; Temeraire is interested in China; Laurence sulks. And so on. Laurence sulks amusingly, though, so it's not as dull as the description makes it sound.

When the characters finally get to China, things pick up. I particularly like the way that Novik uses China to show a society that has a completely different way of relating to dragons than what Laurence is used to.

It was my fond hope that book 3 would depict Laurence and Temeraire returning to Britain to lead a civil rights movement for dragons. Sadly, I'm told that that isn't actually what happens in book 3.
