My first reaction when the read was over is why on earth it took me so long to read this beautiful work of Shakespeare having it physically with me all this while. Perhaps, I thought I didn't really need to read it since I know the story from the movie adaptations I have watched. How foolish! I had no idea what I had missed for so long.
I have never enjoyed Shakespearean writing as much as I did in this play. It is passionate, lyrical, and humorous. It is amazing that you find all these in a tragedy; only a great master can accomplish that feat. The story is both romantic and tragic, as we well know. But what is incredible is that the play is a "beautiful" tragedy.
This is one of the most outstanding plays that I have read. I loved it. I haven't read many Shakespearean tragedies, only other being King Lear. And in my mind, no tragedy will outmatch the tragic tale of Romeo and Juliet. It certainly will be my favourite Shakespearean tragedy.

I agree with you totally, Loretta. Only read few pages so far, but honestly, I love his writing in this play than any other of his that I have read.

I have never enjoyed reading Shakespeare, though I know I should! But I love the Romeo & Juliet ballet, with Prokofiev’s wonderful music. Your review is thoughtful, as always. Perhaps one day you will persuade me to read this play...

Perhaps one day you w..."When I was about 12 years old, I received a gift of Shakespeare plays in prose form. That is my first Shakespearean experience. And I loved many of them then. Unfortunately I've lost it.
I only started Shakespearean proper read a year ago, but I have to say I enjoyed the prose form more than the play version. It is funny that although the story is the same, the play lacked some element which I cannot point out. I remember my most loved Shakespearean work to be Twelfth Night. But when I actually read the play, I didn't like it as much as I remembered liking it.
However, in Romeo and Juliet I found a lyrical beauty that I fell in love with. I hope you'll read it someday Trisha. And when you do, I would love to hear what you think about it. Thank you very much for your kind words.
I should read this again. I did this for my O Level Eng. Lit exam and although I liked it I think what took away from my loving it was all the critical analytical essays I had to write for it.
