bookshelves: too-boring-to-continue

This book, from what I read of it, seemed like a bunch of fascinating short stories all chopped up and thrown together. The effect is less salad and more ...unappetizing leftover mystery dish. I never could get hold of any character to interpret the book through - every time I got a glimpse of someone I understood or was interested in, the story changed again.
Reminds me of the show "Lost"...if I understood all the references and had the attention span to survive the jumps in time/location, I might be really hooked. But I don't, so I'm not.
