This is an unusual little memoir by a bedridden woman about the snail that a friend brings her. Watching a snail is all the author is capable of for a long period of time, so it's partly a reverie about her condition in life. Her observations of the snail are fascinating, though. She ended up doing a lot of research on snails in the scientific literature and in poems and essays. It made me want to buy a terrarium and acquire a snail of my own.
