Not as good as his other novels but still very enjoyable. I would rather read a great western like this than similar "thrillers" released every week. The dialogue wasn't as exceptional as I come to expect from Leonard, but I wonder if that may be a result of the shift in time period and locale. I'd have to read his westerns written early in his career to see how they hold up. Although the characters were typically great, they were not as well realized and written as many of Leonard's characters in his crime novels. I enjoyed the setting, but the historical backdrop of the Spanish-Amreican war only mildly entertaining. It certainly added another layer to the story, but I preferred dynamic of the Spanish occupation of Cuba, as well as guerrilla resistance fighters . Overall, good read.
