it was ok
bookshelves: fantasy, fiction

Mildly interesting plot, even as a direct knock-off of Harry Potter. The juvenile writing style is inconsistent. Grossman randomly sprinkles difficult vocabulary through the book and it disrupts the flow of the text. It would have been nice if Grossman had spent a few minutes studying the geography of New York state. There's no way anyone would travel all the way to Buffalo from the Adirondacks just to pick up some supplies! Needless to say, I won't be reading the sequels.
