This book is good not for its plot, but for the character of John Wayne Cleaver, a young sociopath who is so intent on not becoming a serial killer that he has created a set of rules to live by. It was fascinating to get into his head and see what he saw and try to understand his reactions. The plot was good, too, until it took a supernatural twist. For a bit, I was convinced that it was somehow symbolic and that it would turn out to be normal in some way, but no. It was still a good read after that happened, but it was almost too weird. I would rather see how a not-serial-killer dealt with a real serial killer.

Side note: this is categorized as an adult fiction book at my library, but the whole time I read it, it felt like a YF to me. I'm not sure why they did that, but I have read YF books that are much more disturbing than this one.
