liked it

A bit Too Much Information, this is one of those books that never seems to end. It is both a biography of Kael and a cultural history of the times. Frequently very engaging, but often too all-inclusive for its own good. Also: I learned that while I love and appreciate and was influenced by her style, I frequently disagree with her opinions about single films -- and the book reveals some very ugly aspects of her personality. A Hero made very human indeed, warts and all. Finally, it's revealed that she hated Vincent Canby. . . whereas I liked and valued and appreciated him as much as her -- as artists of criticism. It's sad to learn of such backbiting and bloody rivalry in a field where, after all, everything is subjective.
