** spoiler alert ** I enjoyed this, particularly the novel-within-a-novel structure. You get a nice British murder mystery a la Sherlock Holmes, plus a more modern take on it. And I liked how the Holmesian one was derivative, and even a bit mean-spirited, and this was slowly picked apart by the protagonist, Susan (an editor) in the modern take.

I also appreciated how Susan doesn’t magically make a full recovery immediately at the end of the book, and there’s no big revelation or epiphany. Her choice is made moot and the next part of life just sort of happens for her. Felt a bit more likely after the kind of trauma she’d been through.
