Eh, 3.5 stars.
Gulland's writing is a bit rough, as it lacks the polish of her later novel, Mistress of the Sun. That said I feel that the format of the book, much like the first of the trilogy, being set up as a diary hurts the story's flow and makes it rather choppy. I'll finish the series, but I think it would have been best served to tackle the entire idea a one large novel as well as placed into a traditional format.

That said, the concept is good. Josephine is a hell of a historical figure for all she experienced in her life.
