This is a hard book to review. It's fiction which I often stuggle with as there is generally so much context information that it's dry as sand. This book is compelling and readable, so I would actually give Scheeres four stars for the writing.
However, as someone who struggles with religion to begin with, I struggled with the story and found it infuriating. I can't even fathom how people willingly gave up not only their possessions but their freedom of choice.
I don't know that I would say this is a book that's enjoyable, but it's certainly one that spurs conversation. I've been talking to my husband about it, and my parents who both remember this happening. This would be a great book for a book club discussion.
