"Don't let the bastards get you down." - Margaret Atwood | The Handmaid's Tale

📚 Being the uncultured swine that I am, I hadn't read "The Handmaid's Tale" yet, but with the hubub surrounding its recent television adaptation (which I haven't seen either), I decided to give it a go. I (finally) got around to reading it a few weeks ago and it was a LOT better than I expected. Most dystopias I have read/tried to get through spend so much time on world building and shaping a whole reality that the heart of the book gets lost in dry descriptions.

The Handmaid's Tale is different. It was subtle, almost a seduction. The descent from a 'not so bad/better than most' handmaid's reality, to the full realization of everything Offred lost, and how easy it was for all that she lost to be taken away from her... wow. A definite must-read.
