How to Pray

Concise chapters and approachable language on prayer. Though Torrey writes over a century ago, his book is still very significant. How to Pray seems like a small book you can speed through, but I found it helpful to contemplate each chapter for a time before continuing.
noteworthy thoughts from Torrey:
-prayer brings power into our work
-go into the presence of God in prayer - silence, surrender, rest
-pray according to promises of the Word
-the Spirit leads us to pray "according to His will"
-pray with faith that He will answer
-be persistent in prayer - there is no shame in praying for something for a long time
-be in the Word
-things that can hinder prayer: selfishness, sin, idols, an unforgiving heart, doubt
-pray often, because Jesus did
-often we pray insincerely because we do not want it to cost us
