** spoiler alert ** A surprisingly gripping book in which very little happens.

The tales of Christopher Isherwoods everyday experiences are fascinating and enthralling from beginning to end. It is difficult to imagine what it would have been like to read in 1939 before the knowledge of the holocaust and the truth of the Nazi regime. It ends on a what feels like a real sense of foreboding, thought of course Isherwood could not have foreseen what was to come.

However it is equally fascinating to read with hindsight. Seeing the subtle build of power and also the clash of political ideas at the time. To read just how close it was between Nazi and communist ideals. A few demonstrations one way or the other and all of history would now be different.

Definitely worth a read if you have any interest in the era.
