it was amazing

4.5 out of 5 stars

The first 70 pages or so of the novel dragged for me, as they feature a long-winded explanation of Halliday's life, the Easter Egg hunt challenge, and world-building description dumps. Once the plot finally kicked in, I enjoyed Parzival's search for the egg, the villainous deeds of IOI, and the evolution of the High Five characters and their friendships. While I appreciated the 80s references and understood the majority of them, they did feel a bit overkill at times. The larger themes of human connection and reality vs. screentime added some depth to the plot, and I appreciated the message given the social media-driven world we live in. Overall, a fun adventure story for readers who love video games, 80s pop culture, and evil dystopian regimes.
