It's hard to limit this book to a three-star review, but upon reflection, I don't have a choice. The stories within a story of charging into anti-Christian cultures armed only with the Gospel are amazing, on the verge of unbelievable. But the author left me with a sense that, even despite his diversity of experiences, his worldview has shrunk instead of expanded. There's not enough mystery and nuance--Ripken seems to "know" exactly how one should act in a situation where one's own life, or the life of loved ones, is threatened for the sake of preaching the Good News.

By all means, read the book--but then consider watching the Martin Scorsese movie "Silence" as well, where I thought the subject of risking lives for the sake of prostelization was handled with the mystery and nuance it deserves.
